Sapsuckers are four species of North American woodpeckers that can also be spotted around Los Angeles County locally. Red-breasted sapsucker (S. ruber) is probably the type of woodpecker expected to be spotted when searching for this bird around L.A. the other three can still be spotted here, but are more elusive so take a pic if possible! Locally sapsuckers can be seen in the winter months, so go out before they’re gone. An obvious good way to find them are just listening to the pecking of the wood, they’re usually seen in dense woods. Veterans Park close to Mission College has been reported to have spotted the yellow bellied sapsucker , pictured above, as far back as 2010 and reported as recently as 2013. Keep up to date with
