Sapsuckers are four species of North American woodpeckers that can also be spotted around Los Angeles County locally. Red-breasted sapsucker (S. ruber) is probably the type of woodpecker expected to be spotted when searching for this bird around L.A. the other three can still be spotted here, but are more elusive so take a pic if possible! Locally sapsuckers can be seen in the winter months, so go out before they’re gone. An obvious good way to find them are just listening to the pecking of the wood, they’re usually seen in dense woods. Veterans Park close to Mission College has been reported to have spotted the yellow bellied sapsucker , pictured above, as far back as 2010 and reported as recently as 2013. Keep up to date with

Western Scrub-Jay – Aphelocoma californica
The valley has many hidden gems previously highlighted in Weekly Spotlight 04/10/2016 O’Melveney Park brings to us an abundance of opportunities of different varieties of birds that can be seen. A convenient checklist of Birds of O’Melveney Park brought to us Courtesy of The San Fernando Valley Audubon Society is a great start to bring on your next trip to the park.

One bird common all season is the Western Scrub Jay, which can usually be found in flocks and also can be seen in the air, trees, or ground foraging. With the abundance of green space O’Melveney has provided a protected habitat for local wildlife to thrive, Western Scrub Jay’s are typically easier to spot. Take a walk run, hike, rock climb, or disk golf outdoors, more than likely you may come across a Western Scrub Jay or many others off the Birds of O’Melveney Park checklist.

Parking can be found in the area for free and a small café is located right on the lake where Pedal Boats may be rented to get your exercise on the open water.  During spring and summer the lilies and Lotus are in bloom and in July the famed Lotus Festival is held here. In the City of Los Angeles in Los Angeles County, California—connecting approximately seven miles from the north side of Griffith Park at Riverside Drive (at Zoo Drive) along the Los Angeles River to Barclay Street in Elysian Valley, north of Downtown Los Angeles.  This is not a loop trail so plan on 14 miles end to end round trip.

This run can be done year round and at times has evening events as well.  Plan on bringing extra water during the hotter parts of the day or Summer season.
