It is important to be prepared when you are hiking, in order to make your experience as smooth as possible. Here are some important tips that can be useful for hikers of all levels.

Tell a Friend – Whenever you are going on a hike, let someone know what area you are going to be in as well as give them a copy of your route. You should also let them know when you are planning on leaving for your hike and when you plan to finish.

Know the Area and Terrain – It is helpful to print out a topographical map of the area you will be hiking in. This way, you will know the difficulty of your hike, and you will be familiar with the trail so it is easier to navigate.

Check the Weather – This is one of the most useful things you can do before you go on a hike. We all know that the weather can be unpredictable, and that the weather man on the morning news is not always right. Besides checking the weather online or on your phone, take a look at the sky outside to see if there are any clouds, if it’s windy, or if it’s sunny so you know how you should dress. Knowing the weather conditions along with the terrain and route will give you a lot of preparation for your hike.

Bring a Buddy – Unless you are an expert at a certain trail that you have been to many times, or if it’s in a high-traffic area, you should always bring a hiking partner with you. Not only will this decrease your chances of getting lost, but it will also provide you with company, new knowledge, building relationships, an extra hand in case of injury, and it will lighten the load of your gear.

Check for Permits – Some trails and wilderness areas require a permit or recreation pass. You can check if the area you will be visiting requires one here in order to avoid unnecessary fines.

By following these steps, you will be prepared for the unexpected, and your hiking experience will go without a hitch.
