The following should be considered for safety before embarking on a climbing adventure.

First and foremost check your gear to be sure it is in good shape.

No frayed runners or ropes.

Shoes that have complete soles and lasts.

Harness that fits well and is not compromised.

Helmet if climbing in very busy or exposed areas with loose rock

Next be sure of the area you are going

Check maps

Route difficulties – Don’t bit off more than you can chew.

Know the down routes – sometimes the only way down is the same way you went up and generally down-climbing is harder than going up.

Weather – You do not wanna be on exposed rock in a storm.

Know your partner and their abilities – your life may be in their hands and vis-versa

Follow common sense.

Have a first aid kit around – include snake bite kit if in remote areas.  LAs got snakes!!

Camera for spotting or in case of bites so you can photo offender for proper ID and antidote.

Bring food and ample water for hydration – especially in Summer.  Climbers may prefer Cliff bars or other quick energy bars and Gatorade or other electrolyte replacer.

Wear appropriate layers for the season- Warm/hot days and cool/cold nights with some chance rain and strong winds.

Bring comfortable walking/hiking shoes in addition to climbing shoes

Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses as applicable
